Should you keep learning new skills after having a stable job?

For most people, life is a joyful adventure, and it means that they stop learning after securing jobs for themselves. But it seems like the wrong way to think. Without knowledge, even the most talented person cannot improve their performance. 

Besides, fueling with curiosity and collaborative spirit in the working environment creates positive encouragement to foster your career path. Reading well-known books, participating in class, joining an English-speaking group, or writing blogs are better ways to remain your stable income.

The science behind learning new things

Some studies show that our brains have the capability of change - it continues to grow, heal, and form the neuroplasticity which occurs in our brains from the day we are born until becoming an adult. 

Normally, we used to think that the brain we were born with was the brain we got, especially in the face of brain injury. In fact, the brain organizes itself to replace lost functions or maximize the remaining ones when the brain is injured, and when we learn something new. 

This shows how learning and practicing help transform and change brains. If you put your brains in a quiet mood for too long, they will not remember important things and they get “lazy” at work. 

Learning affects your employability

Sustained learning is very valuable in today’s workplace where technologies, processes, and how we interact are being modified in the digital age. The chances to get noticed by top organizations are based on your eagerness and competence to stay on the cusp of new trends and technologies (and sometimes even ahead of them) and to expand your knowledge-base at lightning speed.

To carry on and adapt quickly to challenges, employers will look for versatile and multi-faceted employees who are not only capable of accomplishing a difficult role but also capable of being readily changed, fortunately - skills gained from constant learning and application. Moreover, employers need someone willing to step up to take on projects, expand their network, and being recognized by promotion.

The following qualities are some suggestions for how you can extend your mind - literally and metaphorically:

  • Commit yourself to work: It is not easy to drag yourself to the gym every day. But you still do it because you know it's good for your health. Commit to learning new things every day. Learning is a habit - most are learned in six weeks.
  • Read books anywhere and anytime: The most successful people read books every day. Not to mention, it's a great way to use time wisely, even when you're on a crowded subway. Books that are known to be your best friend for a reason. Reading helps to build confidence, reducing stress, and inspire a better mood for acquiring knowledge. Once you start reading and make it your habit, you will eventually become addicted to it.
  • Try training programs: There are learning opportunities within your working environment. Many companies hold training seminars or are willing to pay tuition costs if you achieve work KPIs or if you negotiate tuition as part of your compensation package.
  • Join a discussion: Finding like-minded individuals or organizations with aim of the discussion is a great way to keep learning new things. Find training workshops or networks that will lift you from the ground and introduce you to new experiences, information, and ways of thinking. Not sure where to start? Social media sites like LinkedIn are a great way to find others in your industry with valuable insights to share.
  • Update your existing skills: Think about the existing skills you have. Look into upgrading your current skills or new certifications. Learn and relearn your existing skills will increase your confidence and make you better and more efficient at your job. Nothing makes you stand taller, strengthens your intelligence, or prepares you for the future like confidence!
  • Take on a challenge: Take risks while letting your brain do the test. Therefore, you can refresh your knowledge and start learning explosively and completely. Whether it's studying a new language or volunteering for a project you've never engaged in before, try something new that scares you! Think of how taking that leap will enrich your skills and allow you to think faster and more creatively. Imagine what you will bring to your workplace with total brand-new skills.

Good things come when you try your best and challenge yourself to acquire new skills. To activate those synapses, push those connections, build new mental bridges, and learn something new! Learning motivates you to change, not to hate it. And in today's world, change is the only thing we can trust.
